 You may have
watched it live, or even on tv. I did not. Nor did I watch the Oscar awards but
that could be a separate post all together.  Many did watch the 57th
Presidential Inauguration January 21, 2013, at
11:55 AM.  Many people noticed something different
this year. Something they thought was strange. Many posted about how the
Marines did not have bolts in the M1s while marching and that the Marines might not even be Marines.

Correct. The Old Guard, Marines, AirForce and Navy did not have
bolts
or firing mechanisms within their M1 weapons. However, this has been the
case as far as I can tell beginning this year. I researched it back to previous
presidents and could not find any supporting documents or pictures that clearly
showed bolts removed from parade participants prior to 2009. (If you have one, send it to me)

What is a M1 rifle any way
you ask?

The M1 Garand (officially designated as United
States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1 and later it was just called Rifle,
Caliber .30, M1, and also abbreviated as US Rifle, Cal. .30, M1) is
chambered for the .30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge. It was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to
the infantry
of any nation.[4] Called
"the greatest battle implement ever devised" by General George
S. Patton
,[5] the
Garand officially replaced the bolt-action
M1903 Springfield as the standard service
rifle
of the United States Armed Forces in 1936
and was subsequently replaced by the selective
fire
M14
in 1957. However, the M1 continued to be used in large numbers until 1963 and
to a lesser degree until 1976. Like its predecessor, the M1 originated from the
Springfield Armory.

The M1 "is an air-cooled, gas-operated, clip-fed, and
semiautomatic shoulder weapon. This means that the air cools the barrel; that
the power to cock the rifle and chamber the succeeding round comes from the
expanding gas of the round fired previously; that it is loaded by inserting a
metal clip (containing a maximum of eight rounds) into the receiver; and that
the rifle fires one round each time the trigger is pulled ".[6]
After the eight rounds have been shot the clip automatically ejects causing a
"ping" noise to occur.

The M1 was used extensively by U.S. forces in World War
II
, the Korean
War
, and, to a limited extent, the Vietnam War.
Most M1 rifles were issued to soldiers and Marines, though many thousands were also
lent or provided as foreign aid to America's allies. The Garand is still used
by drill
teams
and military honor guards. (Thank you Wikipedia)

This
is what one looks like:

As noted many “drill” units use the M1. Now how can you
tell if he “bolt” is removed? The bolt is the mechanism part of the rifle that
contains the firing pin and actually fires the projectile. (without going into
a history lesson here)

Here is a picture with a bolt in place:

Now that you are educated and can tell the difference, why
did the Marines and other units not have bolts in their weapons?

I know your next question, who is Brian Leary? (see
links)

Who were the Marines marching in
the inauguration?

They were a combination of Alpha & Bravo Company Marines, from Marine Barracks 8th & I, the Presidents Own
Marine band and some componets of the 2d Marine Division band from Camp
Lejeune. There were many blogs protesting that Marines in formation hadnt
shaved, were marching out of step etc etc. Look, we can arm chair the hell out
of them from our house. Those were 8th & I Marines. “They were
sloppy” some said, “they couldn’t be 8th &I Marines”  they
wernt friday evening parade sharp! Perhaps not, you get out in the cold at 0330, hurry up
and wait in the dark, play silly reindere games until 11am when you march down
the road for the world to see. Lets see you do it. (yes, I will defend my Marines).

Not only the Marines but many other parade units in the inauguration did not
have bolts.(if you cant see the lack of bolts in the below pics, go to the links and double click and they all get very big)

The Old Guard didnt have bolts:

The Navy didnt have bolts

However, I did find pictures of “bolts” in Springfield
1903 bolt action rifle with the bolt handle clearly visible (Springfields look
very much like M1s to the basic person but they are very different) in the
U.S. Capitol for the 56th Presidential Inauguration to begin in Washington, January 20, 2009.

And again in 2009, bolts were in the weapons for the parade:

In closing, people, we got to stay cool and before you
commit to believing the “word” (as Gy would say) know the difference between
good gouge and bad gouge and the way you do that is educate yourself vis believeing what someone tells you. It happens on both sides of the fence people. There
are all kinds of sites out there proclaiming the president replaced the Marines
during the inauguration. That didnt happen. If I found out different, I would tell you here. The
key is to educate yourself before you commit. Was the Army, Navy, AirForce,
Marines parade members marching without bolts in their weapons? Yes. Were they without bolts during
president Bush’s inauguration? I can’t find any evidence of that and from the previous pics, it looks like bolts were in weapons in 2009.

Were those 8th
& I Marines? Yes, they were and I’m proud they marched strong. They are
Marines. Some may say, "what does this Marine writing this post know about any of this?" He is just drinking the cool aide…. (first if you think that you havent read any of my blogs) and second, well, besides doing 18 years in the Marine Corps beginning on the enlisted side of the house, then going to the "Dark Side" (officer training),   (currently deployed), deploying on two previous combat deployments to Afghanistan (as infantry Company Cdr)  and three combat tours to Iraq (Wpns Co Cdr, S3 and BN XO), then had a really not so fun job at HQ Marine Corps (grunts usually dont) then getting orders to Marine Barracks 8th & I, where I relearned how to march, march and oh yea, march some more, then throw in another deployment, I tend to get around and know a guy or two that can check shit out, so stay off my bad side.

Besides using our warriors as a political leverage, how about we simply tell those young warriors in all the branches that marched and those especially in Afghanistan, thank you. It makes them feel alot better than seeing their picture on some political blog ranting about how fake they are.

  1. Oh yea, just loved the M-1 a great weapon. The M-14 was ok, put I
hated to load the magazines with those strip clips.
As for the bolts being taken out, just shows you that the military
is not trusted by those in charge.

  2. Normal for the Obama regime to disarm Marines when ANY Cabinet level mag is present & especially if ‘Obummer” is present…They even did this in a FOB if you recall. This doesn’t do anything at all for morale….What is Obummer & company afraid of?

  3. The 8 & I marines looked sharp. To Hell with the “no nothings”. No matter if the Marines were ordered to remove their M1 bolts. They can still shoot deadly straight with the M16 !
The Corps have been shooting straight since 10 NOV 1775. Sorry if you can’t get an opinion from their enemies to verify what I’ve said. A good number of the CORPS enemies were given terminal therapy and are unable to give an honest opinion.

  7. My son is in The Old Guard and told me that they were doing this. I was very concerned because, in my opinion, if you’re going to be parading soldiers around, people should at least think that their weapons might be loaded. Since we know that there are certain groups that want to attack soldiers, I was concerned that they could be a target. I am just glad it’s over.
