If your near St Louis and are seeing a shit ton of Marines in the area, yes you’ve probably figured it out that it is “Marine Week”. “Marine Week provides an opportunity to increase public awareness of the Marine Corps' value to our nation's defense and to preserve and mature the Corps' relationship with the American people.” True but while you are looking at the nice smelling neat “flyboys” hanging around the helo static displays, know that there are steely eyed “Flyboys” just like those in St  Louis getting some in Afghanistan and there are no parades or crowds greeting them there and I bet the ones in Afg don’t smell as nice as those in St Louis.

Those pilots are also supporting those young warriors fighting their ass of as troops in the area plan to withdrawal. Their mission stays the same. One of those warriors conducting the Counter Insurgency fight is Cpl Calton (pictured above).

"Cpl. Micah D. Carlton, a squad leader and designated marksman for 81 mm Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, talks to local villagers in Sareagear while on patrol in Sangin, Afghanistan. I understand what it takes to win this fight, said Carlton. The best way to win over the populace is to show the locals that we, along with the Afghan National Army, are a better option for their future. What the Marines refer to as gathering atmospherics, during patrols, translates to small-unit leaders, such as Carlton, learning the area and the people's concerns through daily interaction. The District of Sangin is located roughly 300 miles west of Kabul, the nation's capitol, and is located along the Helmand River."(

Want to know who is making a difference in Afghanistan? Its warriors like Cpl Carlton living among the people.

While we are on the subject of the above mentioned Marines (1st Bn 5th Marines)  you may have seen the email advertising/asking for prayers for 3rd BN 5th Marines.  Like this one:

Received last week Subject: ~ PRAYER REQUEST~~They are with their maker. hurt no more. peace be with you.
  Prayer Request
We are asking everyone to say a prayer for "Darkhorse" 3rd Battalion 5th Marines and their families. They are fighting it out in Afghanistan & they have lost 12 marines in 4 days.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE  the message spread if more

could pass it on.  God Bless America and God Bless the

United States Marine Corps… Semper Fi, Often Tested, Always Faithful, Brothers Forever

For the love of God! So you know (Knowing is half the battle)  3rd BN 5th Marines have been back in the States for almost a month now. Yes, all Marines could use prayers and NEWS flash, all Marine units have taken wounded. Pray for all of them.

Time for a Cgar!

  1. PS. The actually *fying* fly boys smell better – there is simply nothing better than the smell of a flightsuit imbued with helo exhaust. 😉
Missin’ my crew chief… he’s been out since 95. Oy!

  2. True, along with the sound of a helo comming in (sound of freedom) I love it when CAS shows up when the shit is hitting the fan. Reiforces why the Marine Corps ground guys love having “Marines” in the air. It doesnt get any better.

  3. When I was working as a FAC, we knew that we would get ordnance on target quicker with Marine air, even if we did talk junk about those “air-wingers”. At the end of the day, we were all Marines, that’s what matters.

  4. My son is w/ the 1/5 currently in Sangin . They ain’t stayin in no friggin Hilton . Everyday I say a prayer for all our service members and their families . I pray that God gives us all the strength to get thru wahtever comes our way . Semper Fi Mom

  5. Thanks to all above. I’m currently overseas as well and know that the austere conditions we live in aren’t the best. Also, the point is well made that be it wingers etc, we are all Marines and the brotherhood is strong for past, present and future Marines.
